Tucked on the Yucatan Peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, Cancun rolls out value pricing that makes for an affordable family vacation with a tropical flair. Soft white sand and topaz water isn't all that Cancun has to offer. Discover ancient ruins, underwater caves and expansive malls that make good alternatives when it's time to take a break from the beach.

Summer Vacation

A summer beach vacation is a natural, but if you pick Cancun as your summer vacation spot, be prepared to encounter hot and humid weather. Daytime highs average in the high 80s from June through September. Humidity as high as 86 percent can make a 90-degree day feel like 117. Cool off at the beach or plan underwater activities. Snorkel at the Underwater Museum of Art (Km. 15.3 Blvd. Kukulcan, Cancún, Q.R., Mexico) or splash the day away in a water park overlooking the Caribbean Sea at Ventura Park (Km. 25 Blvd. Kulkucan, Cancún, Q.R., Mexico)

Winter Vacation

December and January see the largest tourist crowds in Cancun along with the highest prices. The beautiful weather is well worth it: Trade in your snow shovel for sun-spanked sand and temperatures in the low 80s, and there's only a 20 percent or less chance of rain to ruin your days at the beach. Visit the El Rey Archaeological Zone ( Zona Hotelera, Cancún, Q. R., Mexico) to discover how ancient citizens lived or head to one of the several open-air markets around the city to bargain for authentic souvenirs.

Autumn Break

You can save big money by visiting Cancun from September through November when tourist crowds are at their smallest. Hurricane season peaks during autumn, and the chance of rain on any given day increases from 32 percent in early September to 52 percent by the end of the month. The week spanning September 15 through 21 is the worst time to visit as it historically sees the most tropical storms and hurricanes. Keep travel plans flexible when visiting in autumn or get trip insurance if you're prepaying your getaway.

Spring Break

The weather is lovely during March spring break at about 83 degrees F, but spring break is one of the least family-friendly times to head to Cancun—hard-partying college kids abound. If you dare to go, expect to see plenty of drinking and nudity on the crowded beaches. Bars stay open as long as they want, so loud, rowdy partiers making their way past your hotel room at 3 or 4 a.m. is definitely a possibility.
