You see the headlines: Amazon is hiring 5,000 work-from-home employees. Maybe you’ve been wanting to apply for one of the virtual opportunities, but thought it wouldn't be worth your time. We’re here to tell you, it is! Jennifer Wilkening, a mom of three in Houston, applied for a temporary work-from-home position at Amazon and got the job. Now, she’s a full-time remote customer service associate at Amazon. Here, she tells us what the hiring process was like and how to increase your odds of getting a remote gig at her company.
“I’d been a long-time customer of Amazon and loved their customer obsession. As a mom of three (an 8-year-old and 4-year-old twins), I was looking for an opportunity that gave me the flexibility to stay home, care for my children and find professional satisfaction. I had started looking for a part-time work-from-home job because I knew that would be the best situation for our family, once all three of my boys were in school. I had been with my previous company for 10 years, and I was ready for an exciting, new opportunity.
“I learned about my job with Amazon through a Facebook page called Virtual Employment Opportunities. I was so excited to hear that Amazon offered remote opportunities! I immediately applied with my resume and a cover letter. I demonstrated my aptitude for customer obsession, commitment and the ability to communicate with customers via multiple methods. Prior to my job with Amazon, I had been a senior sales and relationship manager with a small company. I had not had experience as a customer-service agent before.
“Within two weeks of applying, I was offered an interview. During it, I was very enthusiastic about my passion for Amazon. I gave examples of how I stay motivated and ways in which I’ve had to be a self-starter in past roles. There was also a group video interview, all done from the comfort of my home. It was a discussion about expectations and how we’d approach working remotely to make sure that the position would be a good fit. Some questions focused on making sure we’d have access to a consistently quiet environment, reliable technology and the Internet. It was immediately followed by a seasonal job offer. I started in February 2016. The job was converted to full-time about six months later.
“Since I started, I have worked in many different areas of the business and I love all of it: the flexibility, the interaction with my coworkers, and the atmosphere of Amazon. I get to help customers too, and that makes me very happy. “I have the perfect hours to balance my work and life. Currently, I am working 7:30 to 4:30 P.S.T., Monday to Friday. This schedule gives me time to get my kids up and to school, since we live in a different time zone, pick them up from school on my lunch break and have dinner as a family. Occasionally, I opt to take overtime shifts when the kids are in bed at night.
“I highly recommend that anyone who is interested in a virtual customer service role with Amazon to go for it!
