Children are often encouraged to reach for the stars, but the parents and teachers around them would be wise to emphasize determination and follow-through as well. Why? Because according to a new study, if they don’t pursue their childhood career aspirations, they’re likely to grow up to regret it.

OnePoll conducted a survey of 2,000 Americans for Zety, a resume-builder service. The results revealed that 67 percent of adults don’t have the job they desired in their youth. Among those respondents, 58 percent said they felt bad that they didn’t do so. Additionally, 82 percent reported not working toward their former dreams at all as grownups.

The top occupations respondents wished they had when they were children differed by gender. At the top of the list for men was professional athlete, and for women, teacher. Doctor was the second most popular ambition for both genders, and the most popular overall, and glamorous occupations in entertainment, such as movie star and musician, also made an appearance on men’s and women’s lists.

A variety of factors influence whether a person can work in the type of field that they desire, from finances and education, to talent, intelligence and major life events. Although it’s disheartening that many haven’t been able to become the business owners, cops or veterinarians they hoped to be as youngsters, at least now those people know they aren’t alone.
