You Gotta Have Friends

Posted on January 22, 2011

My friend Jeanette called yesterday. We talked about the macaroni lobster gratin I had served at a dinner the night before. She told me about the timpano she was planning to serve the following night. She needed a 14 X 4 baking dish, preferably curved, kinda sorta like a Dutch oven, but not exactly. I completely understood the kinda like, sorta but description she gave me as she drove to her first meeting of the day. Jeanette is no slouch in the working mother department herself.  As an incredible Italian baker (http://www.mamamiabiscotti.com/) she does it all, from baking to marketing to everything else. Having dropped my little guy at school, I headed home to ransack my cabinets, tape measure in hand. Several photos and text messages later, nothing I had would work.

Several hours later I took my oldest son to an almost forgotten doctor’s appointment, down the road from a kitchen store. I called Jeanette to see if I should kill the forty five minutes waiting for Max looking for the elusive baking dish. Her meeting was longer than she’d thought, yes, please look for the dish.  Forty five minutes and multiple text messages later, still no baking dish.
In an update call this morning we discovered Jeanette had purchased a Calphalon pan I already owned ! She was going here, I was going there. We would meet in the parking lot of the grocery store and trade off the pan. She would return the one she’d purchased. Having just had company for dinner, I had fresh flowers still in vases on the table. I gathered them up so they could play it again, grabbed the baking dish, and went to make the hand off on the way to Ella’s basketball game.
The hand off was made quickly, as only two efficient moms could do. My daughter asked why I had to meet my friend in a parking lot to give her “used flowers” and an old pan. Because friends help each other was my immediate, and heartfelt, response.  All moms, especially those of us that work, have to help each other. You gotta have friends! Next time you need a baking dish, or anything else, call me. We working moms have to stick together!
Post script :  Checkout the recipie http://www.tipsycook.com/timpano-step-by-step-to-a-big-night/   And the flowers moved to Jeanette's sister's house this morning for a brunch she was hosting.  Doesn't get any better than that !
