I hear my co-worker, a new mom in the cube next to mine, sobbing all the time. I worry about her, that she may have postpartum depression, and wonder if I should let someone know.
Before you start speed-dialing the corporate office, why don’t you ask this woman to lunch? She’s in the cubicle next to you, so it wouldn’t be outlandish for the two of you to grab some chow. Then, as one mother to another, ask her how she’s doing being back at work. Who knows what’s bothering her? Maybe a family member is ill, or she and her husband are having problems. You may then get a better sense of whether this is a matter for HR—or a friend.
