Set expectations
It’s important for employees to know where you hope to be as a company, so share goals and results. We have a company-wide call every quarter where we review our report card for the prior quarter. During this call, we also outline goals for the upcoming quarter and share lessons, best practices and tools for our teams to achieve their goals.

Reward employees
I go out of my way to make heroes out of role models. For example, a few months ago, when we were transitioning into our new corporate offices, I noticed that a young HR manager went above and beyond to help others pack and get ready. When I wrote about our new-office move in a memo to our team, I showcased this employee’s generous actions. I’m a believer in sharing success stories.

Nurture teamwork
I tell all our employees that making mistakes is part of learning. I also encourage them to try new things. You sure can’t grow without an entrepreneurial spirit! It’s also crucial to have an environment where people don’t fear stepping up and taking risks. So if something doesn’t pan out the way we’d hoped, I’m as likely to profile it as a success in learning as I am a failure.
