I often print personal stuff at work—soccer schedules, homework. When I went to pick up pages at the copier, a co-worker was reading them. He coolly handed them over and left. Should I clarify policy with my boss?
Clarifying company policy while mentioning your copying may not be optimal here. You might get clarity, but you also might get an official warning. Instead, talk to your boss casually, without bringing up the “incident” where the copy machine stalker glowered at your kid’s sports schedule. Just ask generally, “Are we allowed to print personal stuff here? It helps if I can, but I understand if not.” By taking control of the issue (which could be a non-issue), you show your boss your professionalism and that you want to do the right thing. If personal printing is against company policy, that’s a bummer (and you work for a pretty tightfisted operation), but a simple “That’s good to know, and I won’t do it” will let you sleep again at night. That’s worth a ream or two.
