NorthStar Moving
Relocating has never been the greenest option: There’s the fuel and the endless stream of tree-depleting cardboard boxes. But NorthStar will move your office or home down the street, cross-country or around the world—and it’ll do it all in an emissions-reducing biodiesel truck. It uses 100 percent recycled content moving boxes and remodeled its main facilities for energy efficiency. No worries about broken plasma TVs here: North-Star Moving gets an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.
Rain Bird
The average American household uses more water outside than inside the home—thanks to our love affair with lawns. But this 77-year-old irrigation products company has developed efficient watering products like weather-controlled timers and rain sensors, drip irrigation (which sends water directly to the root of the plant to avoid evaporation) and rotary nozzles (which sprinkle water slowly so grass can absorb it—with no runoff). Now that water scarcity is threatening many communities around the world, Rain Bird is focusing on education, too. It produces public service announcements on reducing water use at home and provides teachers with lesson plans to educate kids in grades K–12 about rain forests and water conservation.
Green Truck
What started out as a great idea among four Los Angeles friends turned into a viable business. They took an old fast-food lunch truck, cleaned it up with biodiesel and a solar-powered kitchen and offered fresh, certified-organic meals on wheels. Green Truck centers its menu on what’s available at local farmers’ markets, its signature dish being the Mother Trucker, a veggie burger handmade with organic veggies. Naturally, all of the Green Truck’s containers and utensils are biodegradable.
