Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-AR
In office since: 1998
Age 50. Twin sons Reece and Bennett, 14
On November 3, 1998, Sen. Blanche Lincoln became the youngest woman to be elected to the United States Senate at age 38. Since then, she has focused on many issues related to families and children. Sen. Lincoln sponsored a bill that officially recognized the importance of “Work and Family Month” in October 2009. This bill recognizes the importance of flexible work schedules that allow families to spend time together. She also sponsored the “Increased Student Achievement Through Increased Student Support Act”. This act directs the Secretary of Education to award grants to qualified graduate students who are studying to become social workers or school counselors. These students are then required to work at low-income schools that do not have enough social work staff.
