Sensitivity to employee needs is evident in the programs offered by this Greenville, NC, hospital, which last year trained 75% of its managers to address staffers’ work/life concerns. After witnessing the effect recent economic events were having on its working families, the hospital expanded its free emotional and financial counseling programs and introduced workshops on psychological issues that workers and their children might be facing. To help struggling parents advance to the next salary level, the hospital upped its tuition assistance to $1,500 from $1,000 and encouraged workers to sign up for the Homegrown initiative, which allows those in lower pay brackets to attend school full-time while working a reduced schedule with full pay and benefits. An on-site child-care center stays open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. to suit those working evening shifts, while an employee medical clinic with same-day care saves all staffers time.
