What We Love

In just one example of this Ivy League powerhouse’s long commitment to women, it granted the first doctorate of science to a woman back in 1895. These days, in an effort to enable more women to land top academic jobs in science and engineering, this Ithaca, NY, university is spending $3.3 million to fill one third of its science and engineering faculty positions with women by 2015. When new recruits arrive, they can tap an array of family-friendly policies, including flextime and part-time schedules, plus access 16 weeks of partially paid parental leave. The big news: A new on-site child-care center now serves 158 kids under age 5, and $5,000 in child-care subsidies is available to Cornell employee parents earning less than $150,000. Another important asset: Working parents can officially request two job-guaranteed semesters off to be with their kids, safe in the knowledge that their jobs will be there for them when they get back.
