FLEX APPEAL This pharmaceutical giant, where more than half the employees are women, has seen vast improvements in its employees' work/life balance through the flexible work options it provides, including telecommuting, job-sharing and flextime.

CHILD-CARE KUDOS Employees may tap 12 company-sponsored on- or near-site centers. Partial reimbursements are available for in-home backup and sick-child care and for backup care at any sponsored center.

LEAVES WE LOVE New moms can enjoy six paid weeks of maternity leave. When returning to work, they may customize a reduced-hours schedule or job-share for short or extended periods. Employees with at least one year of service who want a breather may take a job-guaranteed unpaid leave of up to six months.

CAREER PACING Recognizing that work/life challenges are greatest at certain stages of life, such as after the birth of a child or when caring for elderly parents, the company is exploring approaches to career pacing that will allow employees to temporarily step out of work without feeling they'll be considered less serious about their career.

SPECIAL NEEDS A resource and referral program provides specialist consultations for the parents of children with autism. Parents also receive help locating appropriate schools and education advocates.
