FLEX APPEAL Expansive work options drive this family-friendly company, which offers flextime, compressed work schedules, job-sharing and telecommuting. Ford believes that helping its employees in their roles as parents is just good business. Only 16 hours of work a week qualify an employee for health insurance.

CHILD-CARE KUDOS An impressive 17 full-year on- or near-site child-care centers give moms something to cheer about, with ten accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Parents pay an average of $150 a week per child for the service. Ford also offers generous care subsidies: $85 per child per day to parents who use a babysitter at home and $119 per child per day for backup care. Eight child-development centers offer low child-to-teacher ratios, spacious environments, art studios, covered porches, playgrounds, gardens and birdhouses.

WHAT'S COOL In 2005, Ford launched a formal internal mentoring program, the Ford Senior Women's Initiative, to pair high-potential women with vice presidents who serve as their mentors, offering advice and advocating for their best interests.

LEAVES WE LOVE Ford offers 52 weeks of job-guaranteed time off to both moms and dads following the birth or adoption of a child. Eight of those weeks are at full pay for birthmoms. Expectant moms get two weeks of paid prematernity leave--a benefit that places Ford in a small group of truly cutting-edge companies.
