FLEX APPEAL Its parent company may be 143 years old, but this firm's policies are remarkably progressive. Staffers can share jobs, work off-site or reduce their hours while still receiving health benefits, pending a manager's approval. Employees in the Consumer Care Division in Morristown, NJ, work summer hours — allowing them to leave at 1:30 pm on Fridays if they work an additional 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week.

CHILD-CARE KUDOS
Thanks to tuition subsidies of up to $2,500, families that meet income requirements can take advantage of the firm's two on-site day-care centers in Morristown, NJ, and West Haven, CT. Employees may also sock away up to $5,000 per year in a pretax flexible spending account to pay for care. Moms and dads particularly like the centers' Parents' Night Out programs, which keep kids occupied while parents enjoy an adults-only evening.

LEAVES WE LOVE
All new parents with one year of service are eligible to take 17 weeks off. Up to six of those weeks are fully paid for birthmothers, while parents who adopt receive up to $5,000 to cover costs. Moms-to-be on disability also get two weeks of paid prematernity leave. An educational leave of absence allows all employees, with a manager's approval, to take a full year off to pursue a degree or certification.

WHAT'S COOL Managers who attend diversity training engage in role-playing and view videos that help them acquire a deeper understanding of how to handle work/life dilemmas. As of 2005, the firm offers work/life balance and wellness seminars on topics that include parenting adolescents.
