Attack of the Spam Blogs?

In my post last week, I asked mom bloggers to ask themselves why they blog. This week, a related issue was brought to my attention by a fellow frugal mom blogger who noticed that many so-called money-saving blogs had become “spam blogs” with too many affiliate offers and not enough news you can use. “Where’s the integrity?” she asked.

I have to agree. I’ve been blogging for one year now and in that time have noticed so many blogs pop up with a frugal focus. Makes sense in this economy. I’ve added many of these blogs to my RSS reader and have noticed that over time there’ve been fewer posts related to coupons and deals, and more posts that are clearly affiliate ads in disguise.

There’s nothing wrong with working with affiliate marketers to make money on your blog. I do it too, but I try to be selective in the campaigns I run. For example, I don’t do blog posts for too-good-to-be-true affiliate deals that require you to pay very little up front and then charge you a boatload of cash later on unless you cancel in a specified period of time.

Some people remember to cancel, but I know I’d never remember in time. So I’d hate for any of my readers to end up paying hefty subscription fees because they forgot to cancel. It works for some people. It just doesn’t work for me.

Sure, as a mom, and especially as a stay-at-home mom, it’s nice to make money to help support the family. I guess I’d just ask for mom bloggers to consider their readership and their values when thinking about which promotions to run, and also to strike a healthy balance between useful content readers will enjoy and promotions that make money.

What do you think? Have you seen blogs you’ve been reading change their focus over time that have become a little too tilted toward promotional content? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I do very minimal affiliate marketing, but I am not a money-saving blog. I do feel like more and more lately people are doing in-text ads, feed ads, tons of ads everywhere. And paid reviews without giveaways that are really not that helpful to the blog's normal readers. I am tired of it. I'd much rather just read some good writing! Has blogging become more of a business and less of a community of writers?
