Living in a small town with a former U.S. president and a current U.S. senator—who also happens to be a presidential contender—is very exciting indeed! On Memorial Day, Senator Hillary Clinton marched in Chappaqua's annual parade, along with the Girl Scouts, soccer teams, bands and first responders. President Bill Clinton joined her at the memorial site.
Stirring as it was, this day was also sad for our town, because we honored Staff Sergeant Kyu Hyuk Chay as the first casualty to be added to our war memorial in 40 years. My husband, Bob, a New York Guard major, delivered the keynote about Kyu, and his recounting of the brave soldier's dedication to service brought tears to our eyes and pride to our hearts. Kyu was an aspiring lawyer when he enlisted and on track to become a JAG officer when he was killed.
Senator Clinton and President Clinton both started their careers as lawyers. In this issue, Working Mother is proud to feature our first competition among law firms, culminating in a celebration of the Best Law Firms for Women on September 24 in New York City. With nearly half of all law degrees going to women, we want to make sure women can balance mother-hood with a career in law. Our partner in this competition, Flex-Time Lawyers, has proven that women can thrive in highly demanding jobs in law—but only if law firms are supportive and smart about the needs of moms. What a difference strong policies can make.
If the field of law had not opened up for women decades ago, we might not have a woman running for the nomination to our highest office today. I hope that a decade from now, we'll have many women candidates for president. I also hope we'll be living in a time of peace, so we won't have to add the names of promising young men and women to our memorials.
