Focus on the 100 Best - 2008 Top Moms from the Top 10
In honor of Mother's Day--and working moms everywhere--we spotlight some stellar women.

Baptist Health South Florida
Denise Harris, chief nursing officer, Baptist Outpatient Services; Nicolas, 14, and Tatiana, 12

When my children were younger, they went to school at the on-site Baptist Health children’s center, so I was able to visit them. As they got older, my flexible schedule allowed me to leave work for their school plays or sports. During our free time together, my daughter loves to go shopping, and my son enjoys going to the movies.

Booz Allen Hamilton
Tina Tate, associate; Megan, 14, and Jessica, 11

During my daughters’ elementary school years, my flexible schedule at Booz Allen Hamilton allowed me to be with them for class trips, talent shows and awards ceremonies. Now that they’re older, I stay involved as a soccer mom or cheerleading squad treasurer. Outside of school activities, I’m sure you can guess what two girls love to do with their mom on weekends—shop!

Ernst & Young
Holly Newman, tax partner; Avery, 8

Even while I was working reduced time, Ernst & Young recognized my efforts and rewarded me with a promotion to tax partner last year. During the week, I have time to teach art projects to my daughter’s class, act as a dugout manager at her softball games and judge her swim meets. She understands that I like working, but she also knows that I make her a priority.

General Mills
Kelly Schermer-Maass, human resources director, supply chain; Gabrielle, 10, and Evan, 7

General Mills provides such helpful tools to working parents. For example, I recently used the concierge service to buy gift bags for my son’s birthday party, so I could spend the weekend with my kids instead of running errands. When we have family time, we most look forward to going to museums and theme parks and taking family vacations.

IBM

Carolyn Lese, human resources director, sales and distribution; Jordan, 5, and Jack, 3

Since IBM focuses on results, I am given flexibility on how and where I work. The resulting freedom affords me the time to take my children to school each morning and to read them stories each night before bed. Our whole-family time almost always involves sports: We love to swim, ski, ice-skate, go sledding and enjoy our local playground.

KPMG
Alexi Wellman, audit partner; Cole, 11, Jessica, 6, and Ryan, 5

Every Sunday night my family plans our weekly schedule. I usually take one work-at-home day a week, and I try to plan around the kids’ activities whenever possible. That way, I can be a part of their school events without disrupting client appointments. We also have traditions like going swimming at Grandpa’s, playing flashlight tag on the Fourth of July and going hiking on Thanksgiving.

The McGraw-Hill Companies
Keri Veerjee, customer service representative; Aiden, 3

I was able to return to work with a four-day schedule after my son was born because, luckily, McGraw-Hill offers full benefits to both full- and part-time employees. Since I’m always home on Fr y Day,” and we try to plan fun activities like trips to the park or the library. We also love browsing in bookstores, watching movies or just playing.

Pricewaterhouse-Coopers
Heidi Schuetze, assurance partner; Josh, 12, Maddie, 9, and Owen, 4

When my first child was born, Pricewaterhouse-Coopers allowed me to cut my work schedule to four days a week. I also try to work from home occasionally, since physically being in the same place as my kids gives us more time to bond. When I’m not working, we love outdoor family activities like camping,
hiking and bicycling.

UBS
Susannah Weis Frigon, western PA market area manager; Emily, 13, Luke, 11, and Samuel, 7

Luckily, although my hours are long, UBS enables me to have control over my schedule. When I’m with my kids, I’m with them 100 percent—no BlackBerry or cell phone. Among the many things we do together, our special activity is reading aloud. In the past few years, we’ve read the Harry Potter series, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer!

Wachovia
Arati Randolph, senior vice president, corporate communications group; Emily, 4, and Jonathan, 1

Thanks to Wachovia, I typically work from home one day a week. I’m able to take my daughter to preschool and pick her up on that day. My son enjoys playing in the bath and cuddling before bedtime, so even if I have to do some work after he’s asleep, I always keep the hours between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. free for our evening rituals.
