One of my sons is an Army Reservist. Nine months ago, when he was still in Iraq, he sent an email asking if we could vacation at Lake Tahoe one more time as a family. He wanted to go to the same lakefront home we had rented when they were children. I was happy to say yes, as were his brother and sister. It brought back so many happy memories. The little plastic boats the boys played with all day. Playing UNO! for hours after dinner. Collecting beach glass early in the morning with my daughter. Waking the kids up at three AM to go down to the dock and watch a meteor shower.
But as I started to plan the trip, I also remembered how much work it was. Rental arrangements. Packing for myself and three small children. (Don't forget the pump for the inner tube!) Caravaning with two fully loaded cars and a husband to likes to drive a lot faster than I do. Planning food and spending the first day at the grocery store. Washing, cooking and cleaning just like I did at home. Then, when it was time to go home, doing it all over again in reverse.
There were times when I wondered whether it was worth it. Now I know it was.
We had a wonderful week revisiting memories and creating new ones. The "kids" (34, 33 and 29) loved pretending they were kids again during the day, and being able to take the car into town at night! (We still got in a game of UNO or two.) My daughter not only did the groceries, she loves to cook!
It may be a hassle to get out of town, but take heart. It's worth it for the fun and the memories you'll create once you're there.
