Home-Safety Tips

Last May, when Mike Tyson’s 4-year-old daughter died after getting tangled in a treadmill cord, even vigilant parents were newly worried about hidden home hazards. To protect your child, says Chrissy Cianflone, director of program operations for Safe Kids USA:

Check window coverings.
If your blinds were made before 2001, get them retrofitted to eliminate loops or replace them with cordless blinds.

Watch crib placement.
Place baby’s crib along a windowless wall, away from cords.

Be style smart.
Remove any drawstrings from your child’s clothes.
