You tried to fend off the flu this year, but it still found its way to your family. And if your child is young, relieving her symptoms is tough: Not only is the FDA looking at the safety and effectiveness of over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold products for kids 17 and under, but also many OTC manufacturers are now advising against the use of these medicines by kids under age 4 on their labels. fortunately, we’ve got tips for coping with the flu without meds from Ken Haller, MD, an associate professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University. Set cool-mist humidifiers in bedrooms to add moisture to the air when the heat is on indoors. Dry, heated air dries out nasal membranes, breaking down a natural barrier to infection. Don’t smoke in the house; among other health benefits, you’ll reduce environmental irritants. Always wash your hands, or use an antibacterial hand sanitizer, when taking care of your child, and teach her to wash hers before she eats. This can help quell the spread of illness.
