Top Ten Bucket List for Working Mothers

Posted on October 13, 2010

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about my bucket list -- you know, those things that you want to do before you "kick the bucket."  There are surely many things that all working mothers have in common on their bucket lists, whether or not they have contemplated it (which implies, of course, that you've contemplated your own mortality, but that's another blog).  Here it is, the top ten bucket list for working mothers:

10.  Sleep in long enough to see double digits on the clock when you open your eyes, even if you can't see anything else without your glasses/contacts/bifocals.

9. Hear your child tell you that he or she has become just like you.  (bittersweet, I know)

8.Collect on the 401K, for which you have drawers full of quarterly statements with which you could document the state of the economy for the past 20+ years.

7. Have  your child take you out to brunch.

6. Find the perfect place to keep all the children's artwork that adorns your office, along with years of mother's day cards and miscellaneous tiny love notes from a young child just learning to write, or at least, have the time to think about it.

5. Sleep in long enough to see double digits on the clock when you open your eyes, even if you can't see anything else without your glasses/contacts/bifocals - - on a weekday.

4. Donate all your work clothes to charity.

3. Show your grandchildren where Grandma "used to work."

2. Know that you've raised a woman who is confident that she can have both a career and a family and/or a man who supports his partner's desire to have both.

1. Stop worrying about before and after school care and too short summer camp days, not because your children are grown, but because our society accommodates and appreciates two-working-parent families.
