If you’re springing forward with spring cleaning, be careful what you stash in your attic. Most aren’t climate controlled, so they’re not an ideal storage spot for many home items. These ideas from professional organizer Juli Oliver, founder of OrganizeNY, will help steer your storage straight.
What to store
Seasonal items (Christmas decorations, camping gear, lawn furniture) and items made from glass and metal like pots and pans can all survive the temperature fluctuations of your attic.
What not to store
Fragile memorabilia like photos, videos, CDs and papers are no-nos. Similarly, antiques, electronics, candles and food should all be stored in your home.
Before you store
Be sure that your attic’s floor can withstand the weight of the items—you may have to put in flooring first. Label plastic (not cardboard) storage containers with close-fitting lids for holding similar items.
