My 6-year-old, Jack, has figured out a surefire way to charm his mom. He’ll say, “Mommy, I have something for you.” Then he takes my hand and kisses it. The first time he did this, I thought it was just about the cutest thing ever. But it makes me wonder where my son picked up this gentlemanly gesture, since I still have to remind him to say “thank you.” Jack seems to know instinctively what women want, whether it’s his mom or the girls at school.
One girl recently shouted to me as I picked up my son from aftercare: “I’m going to marry Jack one day!” His steady girlfriend is Destiny, a strong-willed young lady who doesn’t tolerate any nonsense. When Jack wasn’t sharing a toy at a barbecue, Destiny broke up with him on the spot. Jack burst into tears, and it took several adults pleading with Destiny for her to give him a second chance. When I brought Jack to the office last April on take our Daughters and Sons to work Day, he became fast friends with Chloe, the daughter of our creative director. Returning to her office, Ebby found Jack and chloe under her desk, giggling and (gasp!) kissing. I’ve always thought my son was adorable. It turns out I’m not the only one. I sense drama ahead.
