Sometimes You Just Have to Dance...

Posted on February 24, 2010

Working mothers everywhere can tell you the difficulty of work life balance. Well I am no different. I love my career and I love my family. I haven’t quite mastered the balance part yet. But I'm getting there. Over the last couple of weeks I have been working extremely hard on producing and directing, for lack of a better phrase, my boss’s State of the City Addresss, it was his fourth. It’s municipal government’s equivalent to the State of the Union.

There’s the speech, the guests, the lights, the screen, the teleprompter, the venue, press and media, the list can go on and on. So you can imagine the stress levels.  Well, when you have a little one who has as much energy as my little Kaelyn, State of the City prep or not, you’d better be energized to play with her.  On one of the final days of prep for the Address, I was trying to get her out of the house with my husband. The morning went something like this: I bathed and dressed her, my husband fed her, I attempted to put her coat on and then my phone rang. There was a major problem at the venue we were going to have the event, an electrical issue. I am on the phone trying to restrain from raising my voice at the person on the other end, my daughter is running from room to room in the house, I’m running after her. I hang up and stop running after her, she comes back towards me and stands in front of me. By this point functioning on 3 hours of sleep and getting this bad news coupled with chasing her around the house, I am drained and frustrated. She moves closer, slowly, then she smiles and gives me a kiss on the lips and she says “yance mommy”. She began dancing, or doing some hybrid. I then said to myself, why not, and we danced around the house for 15 minutes. Sometimes you just have to dance.
