See mom, I told you it was broken

Posted on March 19, 2011

My daughter, like most ten year old girls, tends to be melodramatic. So when she came off the school bus on Thursday and told me she “broke her wrist in library” I dismissed her. In library, really? The girl plays travel soccer, basketball and holds her own in football with the boys. She never gets hurt. When she got in the house and continued to whine and complain, I dosed her with Motrin, gave her an icepack and called my good friend Paula. Her son broke his elbow a few weeks earlier, so I figured she’d have some insight. Her advice was see how long she whines for. If she keeps it up, you might need an x ray. Like Paula’s son, Ella had no swelling or bruising.  When I broke my wrist, back in the dark ages, it was swollen and horrific looking. Another call to a nurse friend was answered similarly. Take her to the Open House (at which the kids and I were scheduled to work). If she isn’t distracted there, you may need an x ray. Please note all the non definitive advice here. So despite Ella’s complaining, we set off to the school Open House to give tours to prospective families. As I was wrapping up a tour and chatting with the teacher Ella had for second grade, she came into the classroom with tears in her eyes and announced her fingers were tingling. Time to go for an x ray. The boys and I took Ella to the emergency room. Sure enough, she did break her wrist in library. Want feel like a really bad mom ?  Need me to tell you what my daughter said when the doctor came in and showed us the fracture ? “See mom, I told you it was broken”.   Check out this link so you can avoid hearing I told you so. http://www.ehow.com/how_5583486_tell-between-wrist-sprain-fracture.html
