"Rome Wasn't Built in a Day"

Posted on October 28, 2010

I was feeling defeated this week and decided to call my sister; she has always helped me feel better by listening, making me laugh or giving me great advice. The call started out as most of our calls do with the how are you doings, how are mom and dad, how is work and how is the family. At some point in the middle of our conversation I blurted out, “I haven’t sold anything yet and I am losing my motivation.” There was not even a pause on her end, it was as if she knew what I was feeling, when she said “You know Sylvia, Rome wasn’t built in a day, you will sell something soon.” At that moment I wished she could have seen my face and felt what I was feeling when she finished her sentence. I felt as though someone slapped me in the face and I immediately obtained my motivation again. My sister really is fabulous. Ironically, a few days later my husband sent me an email stating how proud he was of what I had done so far and for me to know that he is there if I needed him to do or help with anything. I really am lucky that I am surrounded by such a great support system.
The short conversation with my sister and email from my husband made me realize how much of a support system you really do need when starting your own business. There will be many more moments throughout the process where you will lose your motivation and focus and will need that support system to tow you out of the ditch and place you back on the road.
