Reality TV Scares Me

Posted on November 30, 2010

During the last election, I read articles from people who were worried about the "fall" of the United States. But I don't believe politics will ruin this country. I think reality T.V. will. Even as I say that I cringe as it seems like something an old fuddy-duddy would say. After all, I came of age during MTV and The Real World. But I'm terrified that the youth of today are going to want to grow up to be backstabbing, drunk, intolerant, rude, obnoxious adults.

What worries me most aren't the Jersey Shore kids who are for the most part young and will hopefully outgrow their immaturity. What scares me most are the Housewives. These are women you'd think would have developed some decorum with age, but in fact are just like the 23-year old Snookie except they're rich married women in their 30's and 40's. I'm I the only one who thinks there is something wrong with that?

The behavior of reality TV stars in and of itself doesn't bother me although I do think it's pathetic. What bothers me is that young people of today will strive to become like them. You don't need talent or brains to be rich and famous. What you need is to drink too much, throw a tantrum and get arrested. That's scary.
