Dr. Jan Northup, President of Management Training Systems, Inc. (MTS) is an internationally known author, speaker, organizational strategist and training specialist. With corporate headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona and an international office in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, Dr. Northup began serving as a confidential advisor, executive coach and strategic and transitional planning consultant to senior-level decision makers in military and government agencies. As an outgrowth of planning session needs assessment of future competency and skills requirements, she has designed, written and conducted numerous leadership, team-building and professional development training programs for employees. Since Jan formed MTS in 1980, corporations, government agencies, municipalities and non-profit organizations have drawn on her expertise in working with top and mid-level managers in the areas of strategic and, transitional planning, strategic momentum, quality improvement and pre-employment recruiting and hiring. MTS prides itself on offering a platform of solutions that are tailored to meet the specific needs of their clients.
At the same time, Dr. Northup has kept her ties with academia. Currently an adjunct faculty at Bellevue University, she develops and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of organizational design, strategic planning, team building, leadership, and marketing. Additionally, Jan has taught at numerous universities including Thunderbird, The American Graduate School of International Management, and George Washington University. Advanced training in non-confrontational verbal skills facilitation was such an invaluable tool in working with group dynamics and problem solving that it led Dr. Northup to develop the S.P.A.C.E. (Superior Performance and Communications Excellence) training program which has been given in private and government environments.
As a Professional Behavioral and Values Analyst, she has assisted organizations in meeting employee development needs in subjects including Mentoring, Conflict Resolution, Team-Building, Wellness in the Workplace, Male/Female Relationships and Talent Selection and Retention. More than a million people worldwide have attended her seminars, training classes and presentations.
Dr. Northup created The Promotable Woman: What Makes The Difference video training program that has been featured on the Public Broadcasting Service. Dr. Northup has been a featured speaker at numerous regional and national conferences and was the first woman to conduct a nationwide speaking tour of Australia on women's management issues. Jan has made frequent radio and television appearances discussing the factors that make the difference in the lives of successful people.
In recognition of her professional and community accomplishments, she has been the recipient of numerous awards and commendations, is on the Board of Directors for the Arizona Small Business Association, and has served on the Board of Directors for Girls Ranch Inc. of Arizona, and The International Association of Suggestive Accelerative Learning and Teaching. She is a member of the Arizona Small Business Association, the Medicine Hat, Alberta, Chamber of Commerce, Arizona Chapter of the International Personnel Management Association, Arizona Chamber of Commerce, Federally Employed Women, National Association of Female Executives and is a lifetime member of the American Association of University Women, and as a member of the North Phoenix Chamber of Commerce facilitated the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce’s Professional Women’s Roundtable for several years.
Dr. Northup’s books, Life’s A Bitch And Then You Change Your Attitude, 5 Secrets of Taming Life’s Roller Coaster and Building Resilience examines personal and organizational resilience; Speaking of Success with Ken Blanchard, Stephen Covey, Jack Canfield and other leading authorities is a compilation of success strategies; The Promotable Woman: Have We Come A Long Way Baby? updates earlier research on women in the workplace; and Rising to the Top with Jim Rohn, Patricia Ball and Les Brown continues with more strategies for success. Most recently Dr. Northup has developed e-learnings based on her books.
