Deborah Johnson, a career CIA employee, joined the National Security Council in April 2009. Prior to joining the staff she was detailed to the Department of Energy as the Associate Deputy Director for Management in the Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, responsible for providing executive-level leadership and management for a staff of Security, Human Resources, Budget, Facilities, Information Technology, Procurement, Freedom of Information (FOIA), and Continuity of Operations (COOP) specialists serving the DOE intelligence complex.
Ms. Johnson has gained expertise in every major security discipline during her twenty-nine year career with the CIA, serving as the Director of Security for the Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence at DOE, and the Information Systems Security Manager and Program Director for the Information Security Group at CIA. Other assignments include positions as Chief of the Communications and Awareness Staff; the Chief of the Management Staff for the Office of Personnel Security; Deputy Chief of Security at a large Intelligence Community (IC) facility; senior adjudicator; and numerous security officer positions in personnel, physical and technical security.
As an American Political Science Association (APSA) Congressional Fellow, she also served a year as a Legislative Assistant for former Congressman Charlie Wilson (TX), and a Congressional Liaison Officer for the CIA’s Office of Congressional Affairs.
Ms. Johnson is a recipient of the Intelligence Community’s National Intelligence Certificate of Distinction and a Meritorious Unit Citation for her efforts in pioneering IC badge reciprocity, along with numerous exceptional performance awards. Ms. Johnson graduated from Howard University with a BA in the Administration of Justice/Sociology, and completed graduate studies at George Washington University in Information Systems Security Management. She and husband, Gary, have two children.
