One of Those Days

Posted on March 16, 2011

I know I'm not alone. Everyone has a bad day once in a while. What is suprising to me is that how so many things can go wrong in a single day. It started first thing in the morning when I hopped online to start working and discovered every single one of my websites was down. Since that is how I make much of my living, this was a disaster. But trying not to panic, I contacted my host provider. Unfortately the tech person couldn't help. Apparently I was supposed to respond to an email. I guess with my sites down, I can still get email.

The email indicated there was something funky going on with a couple of my sites. One isn't yet active, so I just pulled it down. But the others, one in particular, had to get back online fast. So I reponded indicating I'd make any changes needed to get them up and running. And then I waited for details on what I was supposed to do (the actual problem wasn't  made clear in the email). And waited. And waited. I decided to let my subscribers know what was going on and if any customers weren't able to access their products, they needed to contact me directly. And I waited some more. Finally, I was back online.

The first site was easy to fix, but the second one didn't like the fix. A quick search online found another option, which I implemented. I emailed the host, let it know of the changes. The message back...looks good. Whew! Time to work.

The next task was to edit my podcast. The interview had gone well, but when I pulled up the recording it was filled from beginning to end with popping. Ugh. I'm not an editing expert. I did what I could to remove to pops, but the result was that I sounded like I was talking through a tin can. As I got ready to do the last edit, the program crashed. CRASHED! This program never crashed before. That's when I began to think my bad day wasn't over.

Eventually I got the program back up and the recording finished. I was getting read to do the next piece of work when a thunderstorm came through. Normally, I just keep working, but considering my day, I turned everything off and unplugged them. With my luck the house would be struck and I'd be out of business for good.

I gave up and decided to hide on the couch. That night Titanic was on television and I realized that not all bad days are created equal. Mine was frustrating and set me back, but it certainly came out better than the people on the doomed ship.
