National Forum Supporting Hourly Workers and Gala Awards Luncheon

SPOTLIGHT ON HEALTH: Smart Strategies for Optimal Hourly Worker Productivity

Astute companies know that investing in the well being of their hourly workers will ensure better productivity. But the most intuitive and successful organizations instinctively recognize and nimbly adopt the key protective and preventive measures to support work environments that decrease the risks often inherent in shift work, and the myriad physical and emotional disorders that may arise.

Stress is just one health issue that affects the bottom line. Workplace stress costs U.S. employers an estimated $200 billion per year in absenteeism, lower productivity, staff turnover, workers' compensation, medical insurance and other stress-related expenses.

Sleep health, or lack of it, is another especially critical factor that affects all workers, but may leave hourly and shift workers particularly susceptible to problems such as obesity, diabetes, depression, gastrointestinal disorders, and even increased risk of cancer. The problems are so pervasive that sleep issues among workers are estimated to account for nearly $150 billion in businesses losses in American companies every year.

With supportive and innovative health, wellness and stress-reduction programs, world-class companies provide for increased worker productivity, greater accuracy, lower health care compensation costs, and reduced worker attrition. In short, these companies treat their workers as one of their most valuable assets, and in so doing take care of their bottom line.

The National Forum Supporting Hourly Workers will offer unique and compelling solutions to support the health and well being of your hourly employees, and keep these workers functioning at their strongest, healthiest, and most productive.

9:15 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.          Keynote & Conversation: Sleep — The Third Pillar of Health and Wellness

In addition to fitness and nutrition, sleep has a major impact on health and wellness. The consideration of sleep is especially important in industries that require night work, rotating shifts, early morning start times or other shift patterns outside of the normal 9-5 workday. Research has shown that sleep deficiency leads to adverse health and  safety consequences and decreased alertness and performance. Dr. Barger will discuss her past work in this area and offer tips to obtain the best sleep possible.

Laura Barger, Ph.D. / Instructor in Medicine / Harvard Medical School / Division of Sleep Medicine

10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.         Workshop: Wellness Under Stress — Practical Tools for Staying Calm, Healthy, and Productive

This presentation offers solutions that will engage both hourly workers and their managers by demonstrating how much more control we can all have over our day and our health-related choices.   Stress resilience expert Sharon Melnick, PhD will share practical tools hourly workers can use to integrate health and wellness efforts into their scheduled work days.  Professional staff and managers will learn a toolkit to create a healthy and motivating working environment and to role model a wellness approach at work.  Managers will be able to do this as they overcome daily challenges such as finding uninterrupted time to think in an ‘always on’ and “need it now” culture.

Each participant will take away strategies to:

• Achieve the calm and focus you’d expect from a 90-minute yoga class by adapting an easy, 3-minute on-the-job exercise routine

• Learn how to stay focused during the day and come home with 30% more energy for the evening

• Tactics to help you get back to sleep within 3 minutes when you awaken at night

• Develop and keep a positive and motivated attitude when so much of the workday is constantly changing and out of your control

• Uncover coping mechanisms to help stay calm and not react to difficult situations with customers or colleagues

Sharon Melnick Ph.D. / Stress Resilience Expert and CEO / Horizon Point Inc.
