A Museum for Us!

Posted on October 26, 2010

Did you know that there’s a museum for bathtubs? And there’s one for beads, band instruments, mustard and money. But moms, there is no museum chronicling the history, honoring the contributions and exploring the meaning of motherhood. That’s right, there’s no Museum of Motherhood.

Joy Rose is determined to change that. If you’ve ever met the intrepid founder of Mamapalooza, the all-mom rock festival, you’ll know that she is going to get this big project done. Joy’s dream resides in the Museum of Motherhood foundation, which seeks to buy a building in Seneca Falls, NY (home of the women’s suffrage movement), to house an enduring tribute to moms and their roles in the history of the United states—from pilgrims to abolitionists to World War II workers to today’s amazing moms, like the Working Mothers of the year we celebrate in this issue and online at workingmother.com.

The Museum of Motherhood (M.O.M.) will feature a physical and virtual library, permanent and traveling exhibits, a meeting space and a resource center. It will honor unsung heroes as well as the great and famous, and will be home to the stories of all moms, including stepmothers, adoptive mothers, married mothers, single mothers and divorced mothers.

When my kids, Julia and Robert, were young, we visited museums all over new york city and other towns as we traveled. We like short visits—just a taste of each museum and then on to something else. I’ll be so proud to help Joy create a museum where moms can take their children to learn about the dignity, the challenge, the bravery and the joy of motherhood. If you’d like to get involved, go to our M.O.M. go here.
