Four Teenage Fishermen

Two days ago my father drove forty five minutes to pick up my thirteen year old man child son and three of his friends. He took them back to his house, where my mother was waiting for them.  Grandma and Grandpa then took the boys out to lunch.  I'm sure that was an experience, since all these kids seem to do is eat.  After lunch, they headed to the marina where my parents keep a fishing boat.  The four thirteen year old boys and two seventy something grandparents spent the afternoon fishing and tooling around on the lake. At 7 pm my dad returned the happy fishermen to me, doing the forty five minute drive again. 16 fish of varying species and sizes were caught and a good time was had by all.  The boys stayed for a sleepover that night.  They were tired from their day on the water, but managed to stay up laughing and talking until 1:30 am. I worked on progress reports for my students as I waited for them to quiet down and sleep. I   couldn't help thinking how fortunate everyone involved in the day is, but mostly me.  My parents are healthy, willing and able to drive around town and keep up with four teenage boys.  I am blessed. My son and his  friends get to spend time with my parents, sharing an activity that apparently spans the generations (although it missed me entirely. Fishing ? Yuck). I suspect my parents would say they are blessed, too.  Quality time with your teenage grandchildren and their friends is a gift.  But I still think I am the most fortunate. I got all this and didn't have to step foot in a fishing boat !
