Women have long been the predominant consumers of fashion so its fitting that there is a powerful group of women at the helm of the industry—setting trends and dictating what we buy and how we buy it. And a few of them are working mothers making them among the Most Powerful Moms in the world.
The women we named Working Mother’s Most Powerful Moms in Fashion are CEOs of some of the most powerful brands in fashion, entrepreneurs who are changing the way we shop as well as several of the most renowned designers around. We highlight a variety of women in fashion including designers, models, retail entrepreneurs and executives. To make this unique list these women must have at least one child who is 18 years old or younger.

There are surprisingly few women CEOs of fashion companies, but two women who made our list sit atop two of the most powerful fashion brands in the world—Angela Ahrendts, the CEO of Burberry, and Maureen Chiquet, the Global CEO of Chanel. Both have done much to modernize their respective brands, emphasizing social media and consumer access, while leading record-breaking years in terms of revenue.
Pioneering entrepreneurs also made the cut including Natalie Massenet, who founded Net-a-Porter and designer Tory Burch. Massanet started online retailer Net-a-Porter in 2000, smack in the middle of the dotcom bust. Many around her at the time scoffed at the idea that women would buy designer clothes online. A decade later Massenet proved her detractors wrong, selling Net-a-Porter to luxury conglomerate Richemont for over $500 million (she has stayed on as Executive Chairman). Tory Burch launched her namesake line of clothing in 2004. Her revenue has since climbed to an estimated $300 million in 2010 by appealing to professional women and by offering affordable luxury. And while many retailers have struggled during the downturn, Burch is on an upswing, with plans to open 100 new stores over the next five years.
Several women on this list have become pop culture figures—a status they are using to build their personal brands. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe has amassed a huge following that led to a reality show, The Rachel Zoe Project. She also counts over 774,000 Twitter followers. This exposure enabled Zoe to launch an eponymous clothing line this year, which has already been picked up by Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. Heidi Klum earned an estimated $20 million in 2010 thanks to the TV show Project Runway, which she hosts and produces, a line of clothing for Amazon.com and a plethora of endorsement deals.
Work life demands touch the lives of all working moms, including those on this list. Natalie Massenet may have hit on why those long hours at the office and time away from her family is ultimately worth it. The mom of two daughters told the UK's The Independent: “I get amazing feedback from my kids. They love the business, they are very proud, and they will grow up thinking that if mom can do this, then they can do it too.”
