Kristin Armstrong
Olympic Gold Medalist in Cycling
Child: Lucas, 1
Kristin Armstrong (un-related to Lance Armstrong) won the women’s time trial at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, finishing in under 35 minutes—25 seconds ahead of the runner up. At the height of her career she took some time off to start a family, but by 2011, she had the bug to return to the sport. She told Working Mother, "I really want to be a mom. At the same time, when I feel I can still compete at the top, I figure why not do it for my job? Would I rather have a job such as cycling when I'm gone four hours a day, or do I want to go to work 8 to 5?"
How does this cycling mom do it all? Her sister-in-law stays with Lucas while she trains 4-hours each day. "That's my block [of time]. I know I'm going to be on my bike at 9 o'clock every morning. Rain or shine. It's just how it is. Then when I come home it’s game on. It’s mommy time.”
