She has four kids, owns a fleet of four race cars with her husband and is the only woman (among 40 men) currently racing in the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge series—and she’s a champion! Vroom vroom!
Melanie Snow, 39, is team manager and driver for Snow Racing, and an independent race-car driving instructor from Pleasant Grove, UT.
Fast A.M.s
The kids and I are up by 6 a.m.—Martin, CEO and engineer for a steel fabrication company, is out by 5 a.m. We have breakfast and get ready for school. I help the girls dress and do hair. It’s quick, but we stick to a schedule. I used to take the kids to school and then drive to the local track to teach race-driving basics. But my son Madison, the youngest class winner in GT3 Cup history, now drives everyone to school (I keep my fingers crossed).
Day to Day
I teach some days until 6 p.m. I also go to the gym and cross-train to stay in shape for racing. I race seven weekends a year—we’re on the road Wednesday to Sunday. Those times, our sitter, who has a flexible job, stays with the kids. My mom lives a block away and helps out. I make a schedule so everyone knows what’s going on, like the kids’ school stuff, sports, soccer and hip-hop lessons. I stay sane with a detailed calendar. Otherwise I go nuts!
Racing Around
Thursdays there are on- and off-track practice sessions. Fridays, morning practice and afternoon qualifying for races. One race on Saturday and one on Sunday. In 2009 I won the IMSA GT3 Cup championship, a Porsche-only series. Madison and I race our own cars. We’re a racing family. Martin is retired; Madison’s been racing cars since 2010, go-carts since age 4. McKay is still in go-carts; Madelyn raced them awhile, too, but is now happy to be in the pit.
Regular Nights
We try to get homework done before Martin gets home at 6 p.m. I cook—turkey, chicken, casseroles, Crock-Pot. We all have dinner together. Martin cleans up, then we all go out for yogurt or play cards or pool. The girls’ bedtime is 8:30 p.m., the boys’ after homework is done. No TV on school nights—we bond instead. My kids say I’m a mean mom about that. Martin puts the girls to bed and reads to them every night. He and I go to bed by 10 and talk about our day.
Active Weekends
The girls team-ski, and the rest of us are on the mountain skiing, too. Or McKay and I might go off with his friends, and Martin will go work on the cars. My hobby is photography, and I take pictures all the time. I love it! The kids clean their rooms, and we all do our own laundry. The boys are good at it—Martin, not so good. He and I go out on weekends. Our small Porsche is our date-night car. Did I mention we met at the track? It was love at first vroom!
