Last month, we asked you what you value most in an online education. Our question, “What appeals to you most about continuing your education online?” was answered with the largest majority gap we’ve seen in our polls yet. Significantly more than half of our readers (62%) said that being able to work at their own pace was of utmost importance, while 38% believed that being able to do coursework from home was what mattered most.
Surprisingly, none of our respondents indicated that the ability to do coursework while on the road was a principal consideration when deciding to pursue online education. While we know a large percentage of our readers currently travel for business, it appears most women were not worried about studying while on the go.
Being able to obtain an education at one’s own pace is absolutely one of the biggest advantages to an online degree program. Assignments often have due dates, and participating in online discussions is often mandatory in an online class environment. However, students have the flexibility to decide when to log on and add their comments to a discussion or what time of day best fits their needs when it comes to studying course material. This kind of flexibility can certainly take a great deal of pressure off of a working mother trying to follow her dreams!
Just ask Nicole Roach, one of Working Mother’s Capella University featured students. As a mom of two and full-time nurse, Nicole is a busy woman who doesn’t let a chronic medical condition slow her down. Nicole says she is pursuing an advanced degree in order to do, “bigger and better things.” We know that, like Nicole, so many of our readers appreciate the ability to fit college into their active lives.
Whether you work full-time outside the home, deal with health issues or run a business from home, all working mothers are busy multi-taskers with various obstacles to endure. It helps to know you can consider going back to school at your own pace. While online learners are responsible for being self-directed in their studies, online schools today provide faculty and staff who are available to answer your questions and to be sure you’re on the right track academically.
Never be hesitant to ask for assistance if you need it. It’s great to find a school that lets you work from home at your own pace. But don’t forget, as we learned from a previous month’s poll, that support is important as well. Look for a school that provides both flexibility and support.
