While staying in might put a crimp in your plans, it doesn’t mean your night of romance is over. “Date night should never hinge on going out, because that’s impractical when you have children,” says Judy Kuriansky, PhD, psychologist and author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Relationships. Here are some ways to rescue your date.

Be a stickler
. Keep your kids to their regular bedtime routine, advises Dr. Judy. If you let on that Mommy and Daddy have grown-up plans, your kids will definitely sense the excitement and want to stay up.

Stay dressy. Fight the temptation to sink into sweats and order a pizza. Keep on your favorite heels, spritz on some perfume, and find the fanciest place that will deliver.

Minimize kid talk. Your children are a huge part of your life, so it’s natural to discuss them. But date night is about having uninterrupted quality time with your sweetie, so focus on each other.

Tip: Keep in mind: Date night is about your time together, not the location or activity
