Sometimes, as we’ve all heard, it’s the simplest things that we need to make us remember to slow down. This weekend was a pretty example.
It was a crazy weekend; a perfect weekend. The kind when you are especially happy because you’ve managed to find some semblance of balance. You finish all the errands on your to do list (a little fantasy here but that’s okay.), and you find some of that precious family time and mingled in is a dinner party of great friends.
The dinner party was a story in itself - homemade spaghetti sauce was inedible and the homemade meatballs to go in the sauce were burnt. Now, is probably a good time to tell you that I love food. I love eating and trying to cook it. The eating part comes really easy to me; the cooking part is a little more of a struggle. With a half an hour until 8 of our closest friends were to arrive we were hurrying to the local Italian restaurant to see what they had that we can pass as our own. I know you’ve all been there and can completely relate.
That night, after a very good dinner, as I was reading bedtime stories to my three year old as we do every night; she fell asleep sitting next to me in the chair. She has not done that for over two years. I sat there with her for a long time. Periodically, I would think about the things I really needed to get done but then I would think of her being 13 years old and story time would be over and the chance of her wanting to sit with me before bed would be nonexistent. I chose to slow down, take a couple deep breaths and just enjoy the moment and take a mental picture of this moment. One that I can relive whenever I want to.
I encourage all working mothers to note the little things and to recall them during those very stressful, sometimes annoying board meetings.
