This Chicago-based law firm was founded 25 years ago as an alternative to fussy, traditional legal environments—and it remains proudly progressive today. While some firms discourage parents from taking time off, this one gives primary caregivers three fully paid months to spend with a newborn or newly adopted child and adds another paid month for employees who’ve been with the firm five years. Hourly workers receive six fully paid weeks off. And to keep dedicated attorneys from stressing while on leave, the firm reduces their billable-hour targets so quotas are the furthest thing from their minds. Subsidized backup care, once available only to those at headquarters and in New York City, has just been expanded to include 200 centers nationwide, with in-home backup provided for both well and sick children and for elders who need personal attention.
