The Importance of Sleep

Posted on March 04, 2011

I’m tired. As a working mom of two young children, balancing multiple demands and priorities, I’m finding that my day is getting longer and my sleep is getting shorter. I’ve been waking up at 5:00 a.m. to fit in my daily workout before my kids get up and I start the routine of getting everyone off to school and work. I thought I had it all figured out and this was the perfect solution to getting more done, but I feel like I’m actually getting less done now than before.

By 2:00 everyday I feel completely exhausted and my mind can’t even handle simple tasks. I don’t even have the energy to play with the kids after work and I end up crashing on the couch by 8:00 at night. No sleep makes me a very unhappy girl.

I was feeling guilty that something is going to need to drop off my plate to get my full night’s sleep, but I did some research on the importance of sleep, and I’m not feeling guilty anymore. According to the Harvard Medical School research, a chronic loss of sleep can lead to many health problems including:

  1. Weight gain
  2. Inability to concentrate, irritability and moodiness
  3. Decreased immune function
  4. Altered memory and learning ability
  5. Safety concerns, including falling asleep while driving

I’m going to need to take a good look at my schedule and evaluate how I can rearrange some things so I can get everything done while still getting my eight hours of sleep a night. How do you get it all done? Are you sleep deprived? How do you make sure you get your eight hours at night?

Healthfully,
Stacy Cacciatore
