Yesterday my company was bought!! Why the exclamation marks you ask? Normally these types of things are usually not too exciting. When you have consultants looking over your shoulder, people asking you to document your job, the VP of your department exiting the company at the end of the year, and a whole new host of bosses to look good for (who by the way work out of a different city), it’s an emotional roller coaster that most people just want to jump off of. But then I realized something. I made it to the list!!! My new company (we won’t mention any names) is one of the Working Mother 100 Best Companies! Some of the attributes that got them there are flexible work schedules, telecommuting opportunities, and they even have lactation rooms for new moms. Being a new mom with a 7 month old baby, you would think that would be wonderful, but the breastfeeding ship has unfortunately sailed months ago for me. (Well that’s a topic for another blog.)
It’s a day to celebrate. I think. As I sit here on the train commuting 3 hours to a city far far away to meet these new people I have to work with (leaving my baby this morning crying to be held…separation anxiety just starting I’m sure), I have to try to stay positive. I have to think that yes, it will be a good opportunity! And since this company is on the list, then I want to see some proof! I promise to challenge them to prove they are worthy of the list and at the same time prove to them that I am independent enough to work hard when I’m there or home or in a different city or working flex hours. They will not get my entire life, but what they will get is a motivated employee who is determined to find balance. I will be good to them when I’m there and even better for baby when I’m home.
