Okay that wasn't helpful at all. I have a regular day job where I leave the house and then when I come home I have to work a few more hours. Its crucial for me to keep my two boys busy so I can work- uninterrupted. Solution although not most ideal is to take care of the kiddos first. In the car rides home I take the opportunity to discuss their day at school to eliminate discussing at the kitchen table. After a planned dinner, I work on homework with one or both for about twenty minutes. Right now they are both in school so I really only need to buy myself a couple of hours. I make sure they both have books to read (LOTS) and they both love reading so that's a plus. I also allow them a little bit of TV time but monitor and control what show they are watching and how much of it. I also encourage play time together for both of them like building leggos. Kids, boys and girls become easily bored so variety is key. And of course I do pause to check in on them, otherwise I will become interrupted. This effort on my part has actually caused me to gain more time to myself because I've made sure they've been paid attention, too. For longer periods of work, I add in a snack. Coloring and play dough activity is good for five year olds who take pride in making things for us mommies. I hope this helps some of you moms tackle this issue.

One thing I do is make my kids part of my business. I need them to help me work because that's one of the things we do as a family that allows us to also have fun. Sometimes making them part of the company means they have a specific task to do--lick these envelopes, find something (safe) for me on the internet, or tell me what they think of the two pictures I just showed them. Other times it means my co-workers have to be quiet for an hour while I'm on a conference call. Granted, my kids are little older now (ages 11, 9, and 7), but I've been doing this for years. Here are my suggestions: 1 - Don't just slink away and hope the kids won't notice. They ALWAYS notice and come running to find you. Instead, take a few extra to get the kids situated with an activity (we love Perler Beads) or a TV show. 2 - Tell them how long it will take and give an incentive. "If you can do your activity quietly for 30 minutes, without fighting, then we will go swimming (get an ice cream, build a puzzle together, etc.)." 3 - When the allotted time has expired, end your activity or phone call. Don't take advantage of quiet kids by extending your work. They are likely to breakdown and then you'll end up frustrated despite the fact that they held up to their end of the bargain for the required amount of time. Just like anything else with kids -- if you are consistent in repeating the pattern, they learn that it's worth giving mommy some work time because she's a better mom (less stressed) when the work is done and it's time to play. For me, gone are the days of long, uninterrupted hours of work. I've learned to work quickly and efficiently in short bursts of time. And trust that even though I didn't get everything done in one sitting, there will be another opportunity soon.

Ahem. I don't think any of us needs the reminder that one way to keep a child busy is to plop him or her in front of a screen ... A useful tip would be beyond that obvious choice of an electronic parent. Maybe someone over there knows an art project that might be a little more ... engaging?
