She’s a “big kid” now, so set her on the road to good table manners with these tips from Elizabeth Verdick, author of Mealtime.
Heap on praise. Did she remember to say “please” and “thank you” and use her fork? Note each triumph with a “Good job!” Positivity and praise help toddlers remember.
Create rituals and routines. Have her wash hands before dinner, then let her help with tasks like placing napkins. Depending on your family’s values, consider starting your meal by lighting a candle or saying grace together.
Engage in chitchat. Ask questions like “Can you guess which vegetables are on your plate?” Conversation will help your child sit for a longer period. Make the dinner table a nurturing place, so little kids will come to appreciate mealtime as a special time together.
Tip: Implement a “take one bite” rule to get your child to try new foods on her plate.
