Though you’re still packing the kids of to school in parkas, yep, it’s time to start signing up for summer camps and programs. Jill Tipograph, author of Your Everything Summer Guide & Planner, explains how planning ahead can pay of.

Time
You might think waiting will afford you more options—not. Other moms have already clicked their way to kid coverage come summer. In fact, some hot camps can fill up as early as the fall before, so it’s best to secure your child’s spot ASAP.

Choice
Programs can offer everything from paint and easels for junior Picassos to computerized space action for young Buzz Aldrins. The choice window narrows considerably, though, the longer you wait. So look online now for camps that suit your child’s interests instead of waiting to pick a camp based on availability.

Savings
Many camps and programs offer early bird specials if you register sooner. Also, winter store sales are an excellent opportunity to stock up on sleepaway must-haves like sweatshirts, pj's and sneakers. You can even book your hotel for sleepaway camp Visitors Day trips and score a better deal.
