A new baby is a joy, but one that can also be stressful, especially for a first child who’s used to the spotlight. Make the emotional transition easier with advice from Cindy Bunin, PhD, author of Parenting Unplugged! 365 Fun, Practical Ways to Connect with Your Kids and Get Unplugged.
Engage in role play.
Before the baby arrives, arrange a special mommy-child date and purchase a realistic baby doll for your child. Show her that a newborn is very tiny, and let her practice holding, feeding, bathing and diapering the doll. Praise her for her exceptional big-sister skills.
Decorate the nursery together.
Let your child help get ready for the baby by hanging a drawing or special picture above the changing table or crib. Be sure to spotlight her artwork. She’ll feel included in the preparations, and she’ll also take pride in knowing she made something special for her new sibling.
Read all about it.
Visit your local library together and find kid books on becoming a big sibling—there are lots of great ones out there, like I’m a Big Brother and I’m a Big Sister, by Joanna Cole. While you’re at it, enjoy the uninterrupted cuddle time that comes with reading together.
Tip: Enroll your entire family in a new-sibling program, offered by many hospitals and mommy groups.
