Spend some mommy-and-me time volunteering this season. “Actively showing kindness to your community will make a lasting impact on your child,” says Amy Wickstrom, PhD, of MoreThanAToy.com. To get started:

Find the right project.

Consider your child’s age, interests and abilities. If she loves animals, try the Humane Society. Likes to build things? Check out organizations like Habitat for Humanity. If she’s into cooking, a soup kitchen may be to her taste.

Talk it over.
Build anticipation by letting your child know what to expect. She may meet different kinds of people or work with rescued dogs. Read books together about the activities you’ll be doing.

Make it a lifestyle.
Whether it’s monthly, quarterly or annually, try to commit to doing a project with your child on a regular basis so she’ll understand what it means to give and make a difference
