Your little one is finally joining you at the adult table but won’t sit still for meals. Kim Laidlaw, author of the new cookbook Baby & Toddler on the Go, helps you settle him down so you can all enjoy dinner. Go for finger foods. Make mealtime fun and interactive by giving your toddler food to eat with his hands, like a veggie quesadilla he can dip into mild salsa, or meatballs with marinara sauce. Keep him occupied. Nix the TV or iPad for a handful of your child’s favorite books, and be ready with an arsenal of sing-along songs to engage him as he discovers new flavors. Throw a “dinner party.” Bring a few of your toddler’s stuffed animals to the table. You and he can “feed” his friends as you encourage him to eat his own food. And, of course, eat meals together as a family as often as you can. It sets a good example and provides an occasion to explain healthy dining habits like why we sit down to eat.
