The last chilly weeks of winter needn’t be sedentary ones. Stay active with clever moves from Len Saunders, author of Keeping Kids Fit.
Commercial-cize
Kids spend even more time watching TV in cold weather—it’s warm and cozy in the den! To get them off the couch and on the move, create one- to three-minute fitness routines to fill commercial time. Sample routine: 10 push-ups, a 30-second jog in place, 15 jumping jacks and 60 seconds of jumping rope. Lead them in varied routines during several commercial breaks to keep things fresh and sustain activity.
DIY Videos
Another way to get your family exercising is to create a fitness video together. No prob, since most cameras and smartphones include a video function. Brainstorm a creative routine and film the kids doing it to music. Then play it through your TV or upload it to a computer, and the whole family can work out to a video that stars your kids. When everyone is bored with the moves, shoot a new routine.
Mall Haul
Don’t let cool temps and last-of-the-season snowfalls stop you from taking healthy walks. Drive over to the local mall, pick a starting point, and time yourselves for a brisk half-hour trek. Keep the pace lively and consistent so you all get aerobic benefit. got stragglers? Partner up a parent and child to make sure one of you isn’t lagging behind to window-shop or to sneak in an ice cream break at the food court. Maybe later?
