Democratic Convention

Posted on August 26, 2008

I am writing to you this week from the Democratic National Convention in Denver. When I first signed up to get my press credentials I thought I was going to be reporting on the first working mother and the first woman to be nominated by either party for President. The nomination of course went instead to the first African American man ever to be nominated.

It is an historical nomination of amazing importance. And I have been rejoicing in the enormous cultural shift this nomination represents.

But could I digress for just a moment? I want to tell you a few things about my reporting from the convention floor.

First of all, Working Mother Media is a nonpartisan organization. Personally, I am a nearly lifelong Democrat. It's true I joined the Young Republicans in high school, but I'm sure my friend Jan and I were more interested in the boys than in the politics. My dad, on the other hand, is a nearly lifelong Republican. I understand his perspective, and I respect his opinions. Not enough to adopt them for my own views, but enough to be clear about how many of our readers feel.

Our readers are both Republicans and Democrats, and we are deliberate in bringing both sides to our editorial mix when election years come around.

So as I write this Convention blog, please forgive me for putting aside the non-partisan editorial commitment of the magazine to write from a more personal perspective that blogs allow. And please blog back your own impressions of this convention--and the next one.

I also want to tell you that I have been a Hillary supporter for a long time. I felt that this was the time for a woman of extraordinary courage and unique experience to shatter the ultimate glass ceiling. I felt a raging kind of sadness when I realized that the nomination would not go to Hillary, and I couldn't shake this feeling for a long time.

I am coming to the convention to report on the issues working moms care about most: child care, flex, education, the war, the economy, the environment, equal pay, the future.

But I will be interested to see how I feel letting go of Hillary and doing what she has been exhorting us to do: get behind Obama and elect a Democrat to the White House.

The first person I met on the way to Denver was a manager at the United counter who was very enthusiastic about Obama, and very unhappy about the current leadership of his company. He felt that United gave too many benefits to the people at the top of the organization and not enough to the workers in the middle or at the bottom. What a nice populist way to launch into the convention!
